For families who are looking for a short trip to Sri Lanka the Sigiriya Adventure is the perfect holiday. Sigiriya is an incredible place to explore, the magnificient Lion Rock is surrounded by lush green forests, where ancient monuments can be discovered in jungle hideaways. Four nights are spent in the award winning, eco-friendly Sigiriya lodge, perfectly located to take part in all the activities the areas has to offer. We have included guided jungle walks, game drives in the National Park and a climb to the summit of the rock itself from between the mighty Lion's paws. There is also the oportunity to glide over the rock by hot air balloon, The remainder of the holiday is spent having fun on the sun soaked Sri Lankan coast at the wonderful family friendly beach hotel. The kids will be constantly entertained with archery, horse riding, kayaking, beach games and more whilst parents can be pampered with ayurvedic treatments or enjoy a cruise on the Dutch canals.

 

Day 1: Depart UK

Depart UK and fly to Colombo

Day 2: Colombo - Sigiriya

You will arrive Colombo in the morning and your tour leader will meet you at the airport and help you to you private vehicle. You will then leave the city and head north into the lush, green interior of Sri Lanka. Your destination is Sigiriya - the Lion Rock. The rock is a spectacular natural formation, once a huge brick lion guarded the ascent to the summit and his paws still remain, beautiful frescos are painted on the walls of the rock and on the summit are the remains of a fortress or perhaps palace built around 580AD.

Our eco hotel is situated right beneath this incredible rock which reflects onto the waters of the swimming pool. The hotel was well ahead of its time in its carbon neutral and sustainable tourism. All the staff at the hotel are local to the area and all produce used in the restaurant is organically grown by local farmers. The efforts of the hotel to keep its environmental impact to a minimum have led to a well deserved ‘Green Award’ being presented to the hotel this year.

Day 3: In Sigiriya, jungle walks

The family will be itching to get exploring in the fabulous area. For today we have included a guided walk on the jungle trails. The hotel is surrounded by well marked trails that provide fantastic bird watching opportunities. Your expert guide will teach the family about the plants and wildlife in the jungle and help to identify the array of species you will see. In the afternoon there will be a tour of the local villages where a local guide will explain the customs and cultures of the local people and show you the farms where all the produce for the delicious meals prepared by the hotel comes from. Day 4: In Sigiriya, rock climb

After two days of marvelling at the mysterious rock today is your chance to scale its summit. Starting at the lion’s paws the trek will take you passed the gallery of frescos the intriguing mirror wall and up to the fortress on top. A guide will accompany the group to teach you some of the history and folk lore surrounding this incredible rock.

Every visit to Sigiriya should include the 5th century monastery at Pidurangala sadly only 10% of visitors make the trip. Pidurangala is a mountain just 1km from the Sigiriya rock and the monastery is set into the side of this mountain. The road up to it is lined with caves used by meditating monks as early as the 1st century BC. At the top of the path is a huge statue of a reclining Buddha and a beautiful little cave temple containing 5 statues of Buddha. The monastery is still used by monks to this day. Day 5: In Sigiriya, game drive

On your final day in Sigiriya there will be a game drive in the National park. The park here if famous for its abundance of wild elephants which can typically be seen bathing in the lake. In the afternoon there is also a chance to take a hot air balloon flight over the Lion’s Rock, this is a wonderful memory of this incredible place to take home with you. Day 6: Sigiriya - Waikkal

After breakfast you will leave Sigiriya and head to the coast of Sri Lanka. The journey will take about 4 hours and your destination is the beautiful Waikkal region on the south west corner of the island. Our hotel here is perfect for families, children can enjoy a whole range of activities including kayaking on the river, archery, horse riding, beach volley ball, and pool games. For the parents there is golf, fishing, aerobics classes, the gym and spa with a range of massage and pampering treatments.

Day 8: In Waikkal

A final full day in Waikkal. If you want to venture out of the hotel grounds we can arrange some great excursions such as a visit to Negombo’s busy fishing harbour. By tradition most men from this area are fishermen and 2300 boats operate from this harbour. It is lots of fun spending a few hours down at the harbour watching the daily catches come in. Other excursions include a boat ride through the Dutch Canals and mangrove forests, a tour of the historic and religious sites or (just for the Mums) a shopping trip into the centre of Colombo. The bustling commercial centre has both designer shops and lively local markets. This is the perfect place to buy those last minute souvenirs. Overnight in Waikkal. Day 9: Tour Ends

This morning your tour leader will accompany you to the airport for your homebound flight. Meals: breakfast, diner
