Where better to learn bush skills and field biology than out in the African bush! The Mankwe Wildlife Reserve is home to an amazing 48 species of large mammal and more than 250 species of bird and yet is an easy drive from Johannesburg airport. Our eco-friendly, research camp is well equipped and run by a superb management team. Whilst at the camp the students will learn how to track animals, monitor wild populations of large mammals, complete transect surveys as well as learning all about the ecology of the area and the conservation efforts being made to protect it.

This tour has a great balance of hands on work, learning and sightseeing in the local area. All meals are prepared for the students by the talented local chefs at camp.

Day 1: Fly to Johannesburg

The group will take an overnight flight to Johannesburg.

Day 2: Arrive Johannesburg

On arrival the group will be met by our local representatives in South Africa. A private coach will take them out of the city through the open savannah and into the Reserve itself. The Research Camp crew will be waiting to meet the students and a delicious lunch will have been prepared. After lunch the group will have their safety briefings and orientation of the site before a game drive in the reserve. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: lunch, dinner

Day 3: Management talk and field research

This morning the team will have a talk from the reserve management team about conservation in the reserve and how it is managed. This will be followed by a game drive and a chance for the students to start to develop their species identification skills. In the afternoon the students will get the chance to complete their first transect survey. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 4: Field research and species identification

Early in the morning the students will again complete a transect survey in the reserve. The afternoon will then be spent concentrating on species identification. The research team will help the students identify the various common species in the reserve as well as how to make field notes on species observation. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 5: Anti-poaching and vegetation surveys

This morning the students will receive another talk from the management team, this time focusing on threats to conservation and in particular poaching. The group will learn about the measures put in place to stop poaching in the reserve. In the afternoon the students will learn how to complete a vegetation survey in the bush. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 6: Bush Skills and visit to the Predator Park

Early in the morning the students will head out into the reserve to learn how to track animals as well as some basic bush survival skills. In the afternoon they will be taken on an excursion to the Predator Park, the park is situated close to Sun City, a short drive from the camp. Here the students can see large carnivores close up including lion, leopard and cheetah. The enthusiastic guides make the afternoon here both informative and lots of fun. In the evening, if the students are not too tired, there may be chance to do a night drive, to try to see some of the nocturnal animals in the reserve. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 7: Bird transects and large mammal monitoring

Another early start will mean that the students see plenty of activity on a biding transect. By now they should be competent at species identification and able to complete a bird transect in the reserve. In the afternoon the research team will take them out in the jeeps to teach them how to monitor rhino populations in the bush. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 8: Curious Market and Pilanesberg Game Reserve

After a week of intense learning and survey work the students get a day off today. They will head north out of the Mankwe to Pilanesberg Game Reserve. On the way there will be chance to visit a lively curios market where the students can wander and shop for souvenirs. Pilanesberg is home to Africa's "Big Five" and has an incredible abundance of both rare and common species. The reserve is the result of one of the most ambitious re-introduction programmes ever undertaken and is a great example of well managed conservation. The students will have plenty of time to appreciate this amazing reserve whilst out on a game drive. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, packed lunch, dinner

Day 9: Full day at Sun City

Today there will be another full day excursion to Sun City, this is one of South Africa's most famous holiday resorts, "Africa's Kingdom of Pleasure" is the perfect place for the whole team to relax and enjoy the resorts facilities. The students can swim and have fun in the water park, try their hand at archery or go quad biking during their free day here. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 10: Fire management and presentations

The final day at camp will start with learning about another threat to conservation efforts - fire! The students will learn about fire management and take part in fire safety practical exercises. In the afternoon there will be a presentation by the management team to give an overview of what has been learnt over the last few days and a question and answer session. As a farewell treat and lasting memory of Mankwe the students can enjoy a tribal drum show at the camp. Overnight Mankwe Reserve (Camp) Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 11: Visit the Cheetah Sactuary fly to UK

This morning the group will pack up and say farewell to the crew at the Research Camp. After an early lunch they will set off back to Johannesburg.
