This exhilerating journey provides the shortest route between two fascinating capitals - Lhasa and Kathmandu. Winding slowly higher into the Himalayas the tour passes remote monasteries and beautiful, high-altitude lakes, accommodation is basic in these remote parts but you will be warmly recieved by the friendly Tibetan people. One night will be spent near Everest Base Camp, allowing you to witness the sunrise against this exquisite, snowy peak before descending into the Kathamndu Valley. This tour is for those not minding a little discomfort and long driving days and who love venturing off the beaten track.

Day 1: Depart UK

Depart Uk and fly to Lhasa via Beijing

Day 2: Arrive Lhasa

On arrival in Lhasa your Tibetan tour leader will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel in the city, the rest of the day is free to realx and aclimatise. Overnight in Lhasa (Hotel) Meals: no meals included today

Day 3: In Lhasa

Today the tour begins with the highlight of this beautiful mountain city. Your local guide will take you to the famous Jokhang Temple - the very heart of Tibet and to the imposing Potala Palace, traditionally the winter home of the Dalai Lama. After the tour there will be time to wander through the bustling Barkor Market before returning to your hotel. Overnight in Lhasa (Hotel) Meals: breakfast

Day 4: day trip to Namsto Lake

Having acclimatised to the mountain air you will be ready to explore some of the natural wonders that surround Lhasa. Your 4 x 4 jeeps will take you out of the city this morning to visit the beautiful Namtso Lake. Namsto Lake, or Sky Lake, is the highest salt water lake in Tibet an is one of the three holy lakes. There will be time to walk on the lakeside before returning to Lhasa. On the way back there is the opportunity to take a dip in the hot springs at Yangbachen. Day 5: Lhasa to Shigatse

Today the journey into the mountains begins. It is a long drive but offering magnificent views, the first stop will be at the holy Yamdrok Lake, this beautiful, mirror like lake is 43 miles long and lies at an altitude of over 4000m. It is also known as Jade Green Lake due to its pure waters and pretty colour. You will then continue to Gyantse stopping to visit the famous Pelkor Chode on the way. This incredible monastery has a high status in Buddhist history as it houses three different sects of Buddhism and is over 500 years old. The orad continues from here to Shigatse. Day 6: Shigatse to Lhatse via Sakya

This prosperous little town literally means 'the fertile land' and its most famous landmark is the Tashilunpo Monastery. Founded by the Dalai Lama in 1446 this huge monastery sits at the foot of Tara's Mountain. Inside one of the chaples sits a huge statue of Maitreya Buddha, 26m tall and decorated in copper, pearls, gold and precious stones. From the monastery the road continues to Sakya (4280m) where you can visit the Sakya Monastery, this unique building is more Mongolian in style and contains some of the finest examples of Tibetan artwork in the whole country. From Sakya you will continue to Lhatse. Overnight in Lhastse (Hotel) meals: breakfast

Day 7: Lhatse to Rongbuk

Early in the morning you will start the drive to Rongbuk via Shegar. Crossing over Gyatsola Pass and Pang-la on a clear day will offer fantastic views of the Himalayas. Rongbuk is the highest monastery in Tibet and is one of the best places to view Mount Everest. In the afternoon you will trek to Base Camp, the trek takes about 2 hours or, for those who don't feel up to the hike, you can take a yak cart up to the camp. Day 8: Rongbuk to Zhangmu via Old Tingri

This is your last morning up in the clouds, an early start will allow you to watch the sunrise against Everest before beginning your descent out of the mountains. Firstly you will travel to Old Tingri and then follow the road toward the Nepalese border. Overnight in Zhangmu (Hotel) Meals: no meals included

Day 9: Zhangmu to Kathmandu

This morning your Tibetan guide will help you clear customs and come with you as far as the Friendship Bridge, here you will say farewell and cross the border to meet your Nepali guide and driver. In the afternoon you will arrive to the bustling centre of Kathmandu. The rest of the day is free to make the most of your comfortable hotel and rest after an amazing journey. Day 10: In Kathmandu

Today you have a full day to enjoy the sights of Kathmandu. In the morning your Nepalese guide will meet you and take you on a tour of three of Kathmandu's most famous sites. Starting with the burning ghats and golden temple at Pashupatinath then continuing to the colourful Bodhnath Stupa, covered in fluttering prayer flags and ending with the beautiful Dubari Square in the heart of Kathmandu. Your guide will leave you here to spend some time wandering the narrow streets of Thamel, browsing the shops and choosing between the great selection of bars and resturants. Overnight in Kathmandu (Hotel) Meals: breakfast

Day 11: Tour Ends

Today the tour ends in Kathmandu, we have included a tansfer to the airport for your homebound flight. Meals: breakfast
